Housed in a wonderful restored warehouse by the harbor, the MUST – SEE Settlement Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history of Icelandic settlement and the saga era. The museum is divided into two exhibitions one covering the discovery and settlement of the island and the other recounting the adventures and tales of the man behind Egil´s saga. This is not your run – of – the – mill Icelandic folkmuseum- the Settlement Centre offers excellent insight into Iceland´s history and a firm context in which to place your Icelands visit.

After reliving Egil´s adventure, continue the sensorial journey back through time at the Settlement Centre´s (top noch) restaurant - Borgarnes´s best bet for food. The large windows, stripped wood floors and modern furniture give it a wonderfully stylish vobe. Choose from an assortment of traditional Icelandic eats (lamb, fish stew etc) then flip to the back of the menu and read up on the history of the town´s oldest buildings (including the one you´re sitting in!)
